Is it acceptable to tip the evening before - in specific circumstances..?

As you are all aware, I issued 5 tips on Friday evening (3 unplanned) and I wanted to gauge your opinions on whether this was a reasonable thing to do…

I explained the background in Saturdays write-up, so all I’m trying to do here, is  establish whether – in the stated circumstances – you feel it was an acceptable course of action for me to take…

Please bear in mind, that if I hadn’t issued on Friday evening, in all probability, the 3 horses would have been exactly the same price on Saturday morning (the markets were already moving in that direction).
I would have then had to make a decision over whether I still tipped them at the lower prices (which I probably would have done) and also whether I increased the stakes (which I might have done)…

What I’m looking for here, is some feedback on how easy you found getting on on Friday evening; and whether it is something I should do occasionally (when the right circumstances present themselves)…

I’ve also add a poll on the right, where you can cast a vote, if you don’t feel comfortable sharing views (or indeed, if you do !).

Thanks for the feedback.

  1. I see no problem tipping the night before big meetings or on a Friday as most of the bookies will have the races priced up,I feel there should be no problem getting on 0.25 or 0.5 stakes the night before but would think anything over this and it would trigger price change.Of course we all stake differently but speaking for myself I got all Friday evenings bets on fine.

  2. No problem at all Andrew, I missed a couple of the top prices but only as I was driving at the time of the tips coming through! But as long as the races are fully priced up I'm all for it.

  3. I don't mind Friday night tipping. I notice some bookies limits are smaller on Friday evening, but like Liam they don't really affect me. For me the one bookie who absolutely hates taking a bet on a Friday night is William Hill. The same horse/price/account on Saturday morning no problem.

  5. rather have bets at night ,as could be working next day ,also allows you to use the bookies at 830 to next morning

  6. I have no problem with tipping the night before. It helps as happens, having advance notification when there may be a bet and the time window that bet will be given if there is one. One issue is whether a couple of big priced winners placed the night before might trigger account closures quicker? I don't know this to be the case but throw it out there for people who might know the answer to give a steer.

  7. Personally, I would prefer the night before bets to be limited to Fridays only, with the exception being night before on big midweek meetings (Cheltenham etc). The problem is the markets are so weak + volatile, and prices are in certain instances, just unattainable for all, i.e only one or two firms might be up, whereas if you have a decent sample of firms on OC like for the Pricewise races, it makes getting on a touch easier.

Case in point I would use is Admiral Blake today at Exeter. how in earth was it priced up as a pony chance (25/1) with 365 + VC early doors quite simply is unbelieveable. I would have backed at any price over 8/1, easy to say after it wins of course @ 11/2, but the question begs, I doubt many would have got the juicy prices, and even if they did, with a discrepancy like that, you wont last long.

I do agree with Mark, Hills are a nightmare to get on bets on a Friday evening (along with the other 6 days of the week aswell for me) if I remember correctly, their PTL limits along with Lads are lay to lose a monkey per bet before the phone gets picked up for referral. Not to sure re Fred and Corals as infrequently use their shops overnight.

  8. I usually find limits are so low that i'm struggling to get required stake on between the accounts i've got left. From a selfish point of view i'd rather bets weren't sent Friday or Saturday nights as i'm working.

  9. I'm pretty much in agreement with Steve's first paragraph above. Strong markets are typically in the Pricewise races and there's always the option of getting on the next morning.

It's a pain missing out on a selection that drops in price due to poor liquidity in the markets. I think we'd cope if those types were few and far between. If they were every week I think we'd all be driven demented chasing prices and those bookie chaps would stifle us even more.

I get on fine with Hills which is interesting as a couple guys above say they struggle. A few other bookies are a waste of time for me.
